Trying New Recipe | Green Tea Spice Rub | Teadroptea

I am always interested in trying different ways to consume tea. I have had multiple posts that I have made where I bring light to those different ways. I saw a while ago a recipe that the Tea Instagrammer – Teadroptea – had on their Instagram story. It looked and sounded so interesting that I just had to try it out. Even though I knew that you could cook with tea, this really opened my eyes to another way to cook with tea – without steeping.

The colors of the spices were so pretty, I had to take a quick picture.

Here is the recipe:

  • 2 tbsp Japanese Sencha Green Tea
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper

I was really torn between choosing to put this spice rub on chicken or steak, but I ended up trying this on the steak. I love the taste of a flavorful peppery outside with a medium-rare inside. Honestly, it was a bit scary to try a new recipe out on my perfect, filet mignon, but (hopefully) well worth the risk. I ended up cutting the recipe in half since I did not really want any left over, and had enough to for two steaks (which was all I needed).

After the Steak: Word to the wise, this might work slightly better if you cook your steak in the oven or on a pan. We cooked the steaks on the grill and it seems like the outside did get a bit more charred due to the green tea leaves. The taste of the steak (perfectly medium-rare might I add), was very savory and delicious. Usually, we season our steaks with a more salty seasoning, but this spice rub was definitely more savory. I could distinctly taste the chili powder and the cumin in each bite.

I could not taste the green tea at all, so I wonder if the flavor would be more prominent if cooked in another way. Green tea does have caffeine in it, so I also wonder if any of the caffeine transferred over in the rub. Part of me doubts it and the other part of me would not be surprised at all if I was a bit more energized after dinner. I would try this recipe again and would try cooking the steak a few different ways. I really want to see if there is a way to get the green tea taste to really stand out.
